Today, I am going to write about hike to Mount Pilatus which we did on the last day of October. So, that is how I “celebrated” Halloween, haha. Started in Aplnachstadt where is also a parking lot, we left a car there and started our journey at 464 m but you can also get there by train. To travel to Mount Pilatus from Zurich the train will take 1.5 hours while driving in a car will take one hour. Mount Pilatus is a 2073 m summit.
Starting point: Alpnachstad, height 464m
Final destination: Mount Pilatus, height: 2,073m
Duration: 5 hours
It was very foggy that day and in the beginning we didn't see anything but our path. We even heard cows and their bells without seeing them, lol. Now I understand how important is having the bell on each cow! The way was very nice, typical autumn colours and a lot of leaves. I was afraid of the weather conditions but they were getting better and better with each step. The fog was disappearing with the elevation. It was beautiful to observe the nature with rising altitude.
I couldn't wish for a better weather and view! Just look at the photos and you know that you have to go and see this on your own.
However, I was getting tired and also crazy on the way. My legs hurting with each step and I wanted to take a break literally like every 10 minutes. My bf was laughing at me. Eventhough it was demanding, I didn't want to give up. I knew it was gonna be hard and decided to stay on track.
After 5 hours and 15 minutes made it to the top. But I was taking many breaks and I am sure you can make it in less than 5 hours, maybe 4:30 or even 4 hours. It depends on your condition, of course.
You can go back the same way down (3–4 hours by foot) or you can take a train (35 minutes) — it is the steepest rack railway in the world! 48% incline, which makes it a very interesting ride up or down. One way costs CHF 36.
It was definitely worth it! I am glad I didn't give up and made it to the top. The nature all around me was giving me strength and helped me to overcome my exhaustion. The weather was perfect for this trip. I can't imagine doing this hike in summer when it's 30 degrees. That is why I highly recommend spring or fall season to hike! The changing nature with rising altitude is so magical. I am looking to another hike.
With love,
Sissie
